Project Ciranda – Child Labor Prevention

Child labor violates children’s and teenager’s rights, endangering their physical, emocional and social development.

According Professional informations from PETI – Program of Erradicating the Child Labor – of Campinas city, “today 312 children under 16 years that were in labor situation, are served by this program” – information given to the Correio Popular Newspaper in 10/12/2006. Still on this same news, through data about the research made by PNAD – National Research of Home Samples, in 09/15/2006, it can be observed that on that survey, the index of children and teenagers working on Brazil has grown from 11,8% in 2004 to 12,2% in 2005, after 14 consecutive years of falling. At northrern region of Campinas, where CPTI is located, according to data provided by mapping made by CMDCA, we can observe as practice of child labor, the sexual commercial exploitation, domestic work and urban informal work.

According to studies by OIT – Labor International Organization in partership with CENPEC – Center of Studies in Education, Culture and Communitary Action, the effects of child and teenager’s submission to labor situations are perverse and harmful. Happens on physical weakness, on emocional fragility and undermines their social insertion. Particularly, during school life, the bad performance and repetence causes a feeling of guilt, generates a low self esteem, and school abandon, by the unreal belief on the inability to learn, by both the children/teenager and their family. “If it’s not good for the studies, then drop off school and go to work”. Inside this context, Child Labor becomes a seductive alternative.

Preventing and fighting Child Labor developing a process that is articulated with the child and teenager’s protection network, for a period of 18 months, in a purpous of social-educative and social-familiar actions with the juvenile vulnerable population, protecting then from labor situations and with their families, making possible their capacitation and inclusion on income generation alternatives, making possible to break the vicious circle of structural poverty that feeds child labor situations. Activities will happen through pedagogy, cultural, sports and social projects, contributing to the personal, Professional and community developoment of 520 children and teenagers, 150 families and 8.500 members of community.

Sports - Moviment and Citizenship

The goal of sports activities is to contribute to the well-rounded development of children and adolescents through an active environment, promoting a culture of daily exercise and sports training.
